HeartCode ACLS uses a personalized adaptive algorithm that sets students on the most efficient path to ACLS mastery. Students follow a continuously adapting learning path that is personalized by their own inputs: their performance and their self- reported confidence level related to each probe. The course content is presented in the form of self-directed learning content, probes, and Cognitive Assessment Activities.

After completing the online portion, students will attend a structured, Instructor-led hands-on session that focuses on meaningful skills practice, debriefing, team dynamics training, megacode cases, discussions of local protocols and skills testing. Where available, students may also complete the hands-on session with a HeartCode compatible manikin.

HeartCode ACLS is the AHA’s ACLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills session.

What is BBP?

Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) are infectious microorganisms like hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), just to name a few. They are found in blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) and can quickly spread disease. Because of this, it is important to protect workers from the risks that these pathogens pose, which can lead to serious or even life-threatening illnesses.

What are OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Training Requirements?

OSHA, which stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration, requires that employers and employees take universal precautions, in other words a "better-safe-than-sorry" approach to these threats, by treating human blood and OPIM as if they're already infected with pathogens. As part of training, employees will learn in-depth information about:

  • BBP and OPIM
  • Disease exposure
  • Methods used to control exposure
  • Vaccines
  • Medical evaluation and post-exposure follow-up procedures

Who Needs to take Bloodborne Pathogen Training?

Basically, anyone who may come in contact with blood or OPIM as part of their job should receive training. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Healthcare workers: Doctors, nurses, and medical assistants
  • Laboratory personnel: Those who work with blood samples or OPIM in a lab setting
  • First responders: Paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), firefighters, and police officers
  • Janitorial and maintenance staff: Workers who clean and maintain facilities, particularly those where medical procedures are performed
  • Tattoo and piercing artists: Professionals who work with needles and bodily fluids
  • Mortuary and funeral home staff: Workers who deal with deceased individuals and bodily fluids

How Often Is Bloodborne Pathogens Training Required?

Each employee should receive this training upon hire and then every year thereafter, as well as whenever new or updated tasks or procedures might affect their exposure levels.

  1. Respiratory Arrest (Bag-Mask)
  2. Adult Cardiac Arrest

  5. Medical Emergency (Responsive or Unresponsive)

Successful completion is based on achievement of the core learning objectives rather than a prescribed instruction time.

State Licensure and Credentialing of Emergency Medical Responders

An individual who has been trained and certified in Emergency Medical Response will not be licensed or credentialed to practice emergency medical care as an EMS provider within an organized state EMS system. EMS provider licensing and credentialing are legal activities performed by the state, not HSI. Individuals who require or desire licensure and credentialing within the state EMS system must complete specific requirements established by the regulating authority, typically a state EMS agency within the state health department. The Emergency Medical Response program is not intended to prepare individuals for national certification, licensure, or credentialing as an EMS provider.

Course overview

Serious and life-threatening medical emergencies often cause oxygen to be depleted in the body. The HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen program focuses on how to administer emergency medical oxygen to breathing and non-breathing persons using oxygen delivery systems.

Using updated 2020 Guidelines, Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen training is useful for First Aid | CPR AED and/or BLS providers who may find themselves treating hypoxia in emergency situations such as the depressurization of an aircraft cabin, decompression illness in scuba divers, drowning, carbon monoxide poisoning, or other critical illnesses and injuries, including cardiac arrest.

HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen is an excellent supplement to our First Aid | CPR AED and BLS programs.

The HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen program teaches participants how to:

  • Assess for oxygen deficiency in an emergency situation
  • Observe the signs and symptoms of mild, moderate, and severe hypoxia
  • Correctly use a pulse oximeter
  • Set up an emergency medical oxygen delivery system and monitor SpO2
  • Help responsive and unresponsive persons
  • Provide medical oxygen in an emergency to an adult/child and infant using an appropriate bag-mask device (BLS providers only)

HSI Emergency Use of Medical Oxygen has been approved by the HSI Medical Advisory Board and reviewed by the HSI Advisory Council. It reflects the latest resuscitation science and treatment recommendations published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and conforms with the 2020 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC and the annual Guidelines Update.

Course overview

Whether you’re an entrepreneur looking to start your own emergency care training business or the newly designated training coordinator at your company or agency, the HSI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is an effective way to do both. Using a blended training approach, the IDC combines an initial online learning session to develop cognitive understanding, followed by a single-day, in-person classroom session for practicing instructional skills.

Intended Audience

Individuals without prior instructor training wishing to become an HSI authorized instructor.

Prerequisites

Individuals at least 17 years old who hold current provider certification and/or demonstrated competency in layperson adult, child, and infant CPR, AED, and first aid.

Successful Completion

Successful completion of the IDC by itself does not authorize an instructor candidate to conduct HSI training courses and issue certification cards. Candidates who have successfully completed the IDC must affiliate with an approved Training Center which will submit an application for instructor authorization. Instructor candidates can also establish their own Training Center.

Course overview

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traumatic injury is one of the leading causes of death for people under 50 years of age in the United States. A large portion of those deaths are from severe bleeding – the most treatable cause of death due to trauma.

The HSI Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding program is a completely revised and updated training program, integrating the latest and new Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding procedure.

This program uses a step-by-step procedure and skill guide to provide guidance for assessing, prioritizing, and stopping life-threatening bleeding based on scientific evidence, national guidelines, and the consensus of experts.

HSI Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding is an excellent supplement to our CPR and First Aid programs.

The HSI Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding program teaches participants how to:

  • Assess the safety of the scene
  • Take standard precautions using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Evaluate a person to determine whether they have life-threatening bleeding
  • Activate EMS and/or your emergency action plan (EAP)
  • Stop life-threatening bleeding by manual pressure, wound packing, and/or applying a tourniquet

HSI Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding has been approved by the HSI Medical Advisory Board and reviewed by the HSI Advisory Council. It reflects the latest resuscitation science and treatment recommendations published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and conforms with the 2020 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC and the annual Guidelines Update.
