Our comprehensive Certified Medication Technician training program is designed to meet the federal and state training requirements for becoming a Certified Medication Technician in the state of Maryland. This program is specifically tailored for individuals who are not registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) but are responsible for administering medication on a routine basis, under the supervision of an RN Supervisor, as mandated by the Nurse Practice Act (Annotated Code of Maryland, Health Occupations Article, Title 8, COMAR Title 10, Subtitle 27.11.05).
Certification Renewal:
To maintain certification, renewal is required every two years, coinciding with the individual's birth month. Our program spans 20 clock hours, encompassing a blend of lecture-based learning, hands-on practice, case studies, practical applications, group activities, and laboratory exercises.
During the program, students will gain proficiency in the following areas:
- Understanding medication administration and the role of a medication technician.
- Adhering to the "Seven Rights" of medication administration.
- Recognizing the various uses of medications.
- Complying with medication standards and regulations.
- Identifying physical and behavioral changes in patients.
- Properly documenting and reporting observed changes.
- Understanding responsibilities when accompanying patients to healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, dentists, Nurse Practitioners).
- Recognizing basic medication responses and interactions.
- Familiarizing oneself with different forms of medication and routes of administration.
- Implementing correct procedures for medication storage.
- Utilizing reference and resource materials effectively.
- Safely administering medication according to established protocols.
- Following documentation procedures accurately.
Course Requirements:
To enroll in the program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Possess a valid state-issued ID.
- Successfully pass a basic reading comprehension and basic math pre-test.
- Provide one (1) 2x2 size passport photo.
- Be prepared to make a $20 online payment to the Maryland Board of Nursing.
- Present proof of Hepatitis B immunizations and a current Tuberculosis screen test, such as PPD or TSPOT.
